The Death of a Clan

July 14, 2008

I have been tossing the idea of this post around for a while now, but recently things have taken a turn for the worse.  I see it in a general sense, and not just in the clans I am more involved in.  It would appear that clans all over RS are in bad shape.

Specifically, I am involved in GUILDS and the Roast Tribe.  Sadly GUILDS has fallen form what it was to a crappy bickering little group.  There I set up weekly events as the Adventurers Guildmaster, and had a total of one participant in 3 months of events.  Sadly they didn’t even bother to leave a reply on the thread, so I didn’t even bother hosting it.  After a switching of forums that were too buggy to register on, I got replaced as the GM by another member who quit a month later.  I can definitely say that it was a nice feeling to read about for the first time on the forums.  I even mentioned that in a reply, but it appears that it was taken down.  It would appear that no dissension in the ranks might be a moderated thing instead of a lack of dissension.

That episode aside, in both Guilds and Roast there threads telling people to be active.  I got a chuckle today from a Roast post demanding that people who don’t check the forums leave a reply.  Hmmm.  I wonder how they are going to do that.  It also begs the question, is focusing on the people who don’t check even a remotely effective strategy anyway?

There was also this tipit times post.  I was a member of this clan a few years ago, and do know Ts, but we haven’t talked in months.  From his post it would appear that Tal Shiar is falling apart at the seams as well.

For everyone who has made it so far, I wanted to mention a few of the reasons I believe that clans are going out of style in RS.  First off, it is the long term gamers who usually are active and involved in RS.  With the current updates, they are leaving in droves.  Although the griefers, scammers, gold traders, and lurers were a stain, they did make certain aspects in the game more interesting.  Rather than being stalked by a revnant, I would much rather be killed and told SDFU by a PKer and know that someone profited from my death than to just have to run away from a rev.  Those guys all needed a system to function in outside of the game to ‘take care of business’ so to speak.

Clan Chat is also a contributing factor.  Why?  It eliminates the need to get together in game.  No need for a clan meeting to have a discussion.  I know that 90% of the events I went to were because i wanted to ’see’ my friends, complement outfits, put a ‘face’ to a name, be surprised that a guy you though was high level was only level 12… etc

All in all, clans will have a continual decline in the game unless Jagex makes some major policy changes, and we all have a much better chance of playing pick up stix with out butt cheeks than we do of them changing their stance.
